Medical Weight Loss

What We Do and How We Do It

Obesity has become an epidemic in our country. It is estimated that 2/3 of all Americans are now overweight. These trends are fueling a spike in weight related illnesses including High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, and, most importantly, Type II Adult Onset Diabetes. In 2004, Medicare finally declared Obesity a disease that can be treated in the context of what we call co-morbid or medically related conditions such as those listed above. It is in that context that Foothills Primary Care is addressing Obesity - treating it in those patients who have symptoms and diseases directly related to their excess weight. The savings to the patient as well as the healthcare industry in general are tremendous. It is not uncommon for a patient to be able to go off many of their expensive monthly medications, saving hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

Besides the incredible cost, being overweight is a killer - literally. Your risk of sudden death increases by 25-50%. In addition, the following serious chronic illnesses are increased:

  • Adult Onset Type II Diabetes
  • Coronary Artery Disease
  • High Cholesterol
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Increased Risk of Cancer
  • Sleep Apnea
  • GERD
  • Fatty Liver Disease
  • Metabolic Syndrome
  • Osteoarthritis

Evaluation and Treatment

Before any patient is treated, they undergo a thorough medical evaluation (depending on their risk factors, illnesses, and symptoms) that may include:

  • History and Physical/Provider Review
  • Comprehensive Laboratory Evaluation (Including Hormone Health)
  • Cardiac Stress Test/EKG/PFT (If Appropriate)
  • Body Fat Analysis/Body Composition

Treatment is individualized based on patient history and testing. The following are the main components of the program that will apply to most patients:

  • Individualized weight loss program based on your unique medical conditions and history
  • IM and SQ injections that may assist with weight loss and fat burning
  • Prescription and non-prescription medications for your weight loss and appetite reduction
  • Adjustment and monitoring of your regular medications for your existing health issues

Who is this program for?

This is not a weight loss program for everyone. It is not a quick fix, easy, or cosmetic plan that you might order over the internet. This is a medically based, Internal Medicine Physician-supervised plan geared towards patients who are medically affected by their obesity. If you have one or more of the following problems, this plan is the right one for you:

  • Diabetes (Type I or Type II)
  • Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

  • GERD (Acid Reflux)
  • Metabolic Syndrome
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Heart Disease (CAD)
  • Fatty Liver Disease
  • Fatigue, Low Energy, Low Metabolism
  • Sleep Apnea
  • Reduced Muscle Mass (Sarcopenia)

Though most medical visits with physicians are covered by insurance, some treatments are not, including injections, some prescription weight loss medications and/or meal replacement programs.
